Wetlands, which are among the most important ecosystems in the world, constitute one of the most important living areas of the earth with their functions and economic values, as well as their rich biological diversity. Both biological and cultural data show us that wetlands are indispensable both ecologically and culturally.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, wetlands all over the world have been subjected to negative interventions within the scope of land acquisition and combating malaria, as well as the effects of agricultural activities on wetlands, interventions to the water regime, pollution from domestic and industrial wastes, foreign fish species in wetlands. Wetlands are on the verge of extinction with threats from overfishing and dumping into land systems.
Wetlands have an important place in our country as well as in the whole world, both in terms of biodiversity and due to the economic contributions they provide locally. Turkey became a party to the Ramsar Convention in 1994 and has committed to protect wetlands and use them wisely, together with the Wetlands Protection Regulation. “Wetland Management Plans” are prepared and implemented for the protection and rational use of these areas.
Wetland Management Plans, which will shed light on the status of wetlands for the activities in the planned region, are prepared by academicians with scientific competence and by our engineers who are well-versed in their subject.
